With age, and sitting so much, we tend to become both tight and weak in the hip area, a combination which invites problems. Maintaining both flexibility and stability in the hip joints is crucial for pelvis, lower-back and abdominal health.
The hip joints are the largest joints in the body. They link the legs to the pelvis which is, in turn, attached to the base of the spine. This is where most of the load of the entire body is supported when standing or sitting. There are over 20 muscles that cross the hip. Any movement that stretches any of these muscles could be considered a 'hip-opener' and any action that strengthens these muscles, a 'hip stabiliser'. It is not necessary to analyse which muscles are involved or how, but skilful, regular and non-aggressive, practice of asanas, as those explored in this workshop, helps to strengthen the muscles that support the hip joints and reduce stiffness of the hips. . This online workshop with Pascale Vacher is taking place online via Zoom. It is open to all Iyengar yoga students with at least one year of Iyengar yoga experience (or equivalent).
